There’s so much good in the world, often in unexpected, joyful ways. Colette Miller, a visual artist and performer from Richmond, Virginia, decided to focus on lifting the spirits of people on the streets when she started creating beautiful, colorful, larger-than-life-sized angel wings all over the world. People seek them out, drawing encouragement, peace and inspiration from her works. Currently there are more than 50 installations across the world, including Kenya, Taiwan, Japan, Italy, Australia and many in the United States.
Angels of the Earth
In an effort to “remind humanity that we are the angels on this Earth”, angel wings struck Colette as the perfect image to accomplish her goal.
Following is the Mission Statement From The Global Angel Wings Project– “Colette Miller created ‘The Global Angel Wings Project’ in 2012 in the streets of Los Angeles, the city of Angels. They were painted to remind humanity that we are the angels of this earth. They are human sized, interactive public art, wings that people take photos with and thus become part of the artwork. The first pair was just street art but the response was natural, immediate and spontaneous– from people of all sorts and backgrounds. Colette has painted wings globally– Kenya, Australia, England, Japan, France, Cuba, Juarez Mexico, Dubai, Taiwan and more, with many installations across the USA. Though some are commissioned and others gifted, the wings themselves are free to the world. Never owned by anyone, not even Colette, though they are her provenance and her work.”
Choosing Locations
So where are all of these beautiful wings? Colette looks for locations that need lifting up. Today my daughter and I saw the wings in Orlando, Florida. They are located near a children’s hospital, which is a logical place to benefit from wings like Colette’s creations. She has chosen locations like Baltimore (after the riots) and Kenya because of violence in the area, especially resulting in the deaths of children. More recently Colette’s work has been commissions as well as responding to specific requests.

Color, Color, Color
Originally Colette was drawn to the colors like indigos, blues and purples. She also uses golds and whites. She believes this color palate encourages self-realization and enlightenment. The wings y are really beautiful, and they definitely bring joy to those who see them. And they are Instagram sensations… just take a look at the Instagram @colettemillerwings.
