We started this blog to share the things that bring us joy, whether we found them on our own, learned them from each other, or got them from other friends. Question of the Day is a tradition from our friends Brian and Teresa. I love having dinner with them, because I know there will always be a QOTD. Here we are, so happy for our selfie because we knew QOTD was coming:
Good Dinner Conversation
You’ve caught up about recent travels, kids’ shenanigans, maybe even neighborhood gossip. What’s left? How about a fun or meaningful question that makes you listen to your friends, and think about your own honest answer? It’s a great way to get to know each other and deepen your relationships.
Questions can be funny and silly or serious and deep. Of course it depends on the tone of the evening, and how well you know your dining companions (or want to know them).
Loose Guidelines
- One person asks a question.
- Each person gives an answer. (It is best if no answer goes off on long tangents, or disintegrates into other topics. But that’s just good etiquette.)
- There is no right or wrong answer.
- The person who asked the question answers last.
Great QOTDs that I’ve heard:
You can buy games that have questions, like Table Topics, but it doesn’t have to be that regimented, and you can come up with your own questions. Here are some that I’ve seen lead to fun conversations:
- What is the greatest movie ever made?
- What do you wish for your children?
- What cartoon character is your spouse? (In case you are wondering, my husband is the father in Finding Nemo, who is always worrying about and caring for his children. And he says that I am Josie of the Josie of the Pussycats, because I am cool and a little bit rock-n-roll — which I thought was a terrific answer, if a little bit of a suck-up.)
- If a theme song played in a sitcom of your life, what would it be?
- What is the best pizza topping?
- What is the best concert you have ever attended?
- What would you tell your younger self to do differently?
- What is the greatest band in the last 50 years?
Give it a try. You might learn something about your friends or yourself. Here’s one to get you started: What’s your favorite blog? (Just kidding. But really. Give it a try.)

Love it! Here’s a quirky QOTD for a girls night out: do you remember a favorite purse, outfit or pair of shoes from your high school days? Mine was a navy, soft leather, shoulder purse. I can even remember the strap-thru-the-loop closure. Back then you bought one purse for the year—and it took a beating!
As you may have surmised, I love discussion questions! A favorite of mine is a variation on one you posed: What was the FIRST concert you ever attended? This tends to generate fun responses from folks of all ages (my college students loved it).
