Have you heard that skinny jeans are out? Apparently the party is over and the fat lady has sung for skinny jeans. We are supposed to burn our skinny jeans like liberated women burning their bras in the 60s. But here was my problem: I loved my skinny jeans. I suspected it was time for a jeans makeover, but I was in denial.
Late to the party
I’m never the first one to jump on a new trend. Leggings: I thought they were a tacky flash-in-the-pan. Sneakers worn on an airplane? I considered them were a sign that you had just given up. Let’s just say that my drawers are now full of leggings, and I’ve worn sneakers on every flight in the last 5 years. And when skinny jeans appeared, I was horrified by them, finally joining the crowd several years after they first appeared. But once I buy into a trend, I’m loyal.
Kalisa shows up in her adorable wide-leg jeans
She always looks awesome. I mean really awesome. But she’s also about 9 feet tall and weighs about, well, not very much. So it seems (to us shorter, heavier gals) that she can wear anything. But she showed up in her trendy new jeans, absolutely rocking them. And there I was, wearing my old skinnies, with a big top and some booties. In the words of Will Ferrell, Christina Aguilera and Jimmy Fallon, “I’ve got my tight pants on.”
After Kalisa hugged me good-bye and flew away in her trendy high-waist wide-leg jeans, I knew I had to do something. But, ugh. I just knew I was going to look boxy. I’m not feeling great about my current weight, so does it really make sense to add more width to my profile, rather than suck it in in skinny jeans? And what shoes do you wear? How do you style these things? It was all very intimidating to me.
I needed help.
I couldn’t handle this task on my own. I wasn’t even sure what size I wear anymore. I went to EVEREVE, because I knew they would consult with me and bring me jeans to try on. (We don’t represent EVEREVE, although I wish we did.) If you don’t have EVEREVE, find a good boutique where a knowledgeable person will actually help you. That was very important to my “journey.”
As I write this, I realize how silly this all sounds. I was on a jeans journey? Pretty shallow, and I was sweating something pretty insignificant, in the big scheme of life. But here’s the deal. I’m about to turn 60. I’m not loving how I look right now. And I was feeling a bit like I had just given up with regard to what I wear. I wanted to feel a bit more “in,” more fashionable. So there I was. I guess I was indeed on a jeans journey.
Spoiler alert: I now love wide-leg jeans.
I found three pair. The kind women at EVEREVE helped me style tops and shoes. And now I love my wide-leg jeans.
I definitely felt awkward the first time I wore these in public. They feel so different from my skinnies! But I get compliments. Not a landslide of compliments, but certainly more than I was getting “with my tight pants on.” (If you haven’t watched the youtube clip above, about tight pants, you should.)
I got two pair that are more casual, and one in a dark wash that feels more dressy. I’m providing pictures and links to the ones I bought, in part because I NEVER would have thought that these would work on me.
(I’m providing the links to Amazon, because we are Amazon Associates. I will also provide the links to EVEREVE, although we have no affiliation with that awesome store.

)Kut from the Kloth Meg Wide-Leg, from Amazon. Or the same jeans from EVEREVE.
Kut from the Kloth Meg with cuff, from EVEREVE. I can’t find this one on Amazon:
And this dressier Paige Anessa jean from Amazon, or here from EVEREVE:
I like my new jeans. And I like my old skinnies. But you know what I really like? Sweatpants.
