Good girlfriends are like bank accounts. We all have a relationship with at least one bank, some of us have multiple accounts, all serving different purposes, but all in some way hopefully making our lives richer.

Give and Take

So think about this… sometimes you probably have the capacity to make more deposits and other times we all have the need to make withdrawals and in some unfortunate situations, if not careful we could even drain the account. Like in life, as with friendships, it is all about the give and take. It’s about being there when your girlfriends need you and knowing that you can count on them when you need them most.

My friend Sherry taught me the friendship bank account lesson.

Sometimes Your Account is Inactive

I have personally screwed this up when my life was on cruise control and I had not a care in the world. I had health, wealth and marital happiness all going on for years. I was so “busy” in my life that I had no time for maintaining friendships. But the truth is I never made time because maintaining good friendships was never a priority. I barely spoke to my lifelong friends, only reaching out when there was a death or something tragic.

My college roommates at my bridal shower. While I lost touch after my wedding, these are my forever friends that rallied and reopened their hearts to me.

Sometimes You Need to Make a Withdrawal

And then my life turned upside down. Of course I had my family’s support and a handful of local friends (especially Sherry) who walked every step by my side and still do. What was truly amazing is my closest girlfriends from childhood, whom I had abandoned because I was too busy, rallied and gave of themselves so freely and lovingly, as they still do.

Annette has been my BFF since kindergarten and is family for life.

When You Invest, the Payoff is So Rewarding

After my husband passed away, I promised myself I would never make that mistake again. I basically drained my friendship bank account with all the withdrawals made to help me in my darkest time. I will never again risk losing my banking privilege. Girlfriends, the really good ones, will always be a priority. No matter what road my second chapter in life takes, I will make time for girlfriends and I will always find ways to keep depositing in their accounts.
